What is RICA?

RICA or the Regulation of Interception of Communication Act is a new government law that makes it compulsory for everyone to register all new and existing cellphone numbers. RICA is one of government's key crime prevention initiatives towards making South Africa a safer place to live and work.

Who must RICA?

RICA affects everyone. This includes telemetry SIM cards in tracking devices and data SIM cards used in smartphones, laptops, modems, etc. Every SIM card needs to be RICA'ed individually.

I don't have an ID book because I am not a citizen of South Africa. How do can I register for RICA?

Non-South African citizens may use their foreign passport or refugee papers to register.

If I am not a South African citizen or am just a visitor, do I still need to register for RICA?

Yes, as long as you have a cellphone number with any of
South Africa's cellular networks, you will need to register it.

How much will it cost me to register for RICA?

Nothing. Registering for RICA is absolutely free.

What will happen to my personal information that I have registered?

All information will be kept confidential in a secure database and cannot be used for any purpose other than the purposes allowed under the RICA Act.
